The fight against climate change and in favour of respect for the environment are global challenges as well as key aspects of our vision of sustainable growth.


In a sector of high impact such as ours, we are actively engaged in identifying and preventing all the potential negative impacts on the environment caused by our activities.

On the one hand, we have developed a specific strategy for the management and reduction of polluting emissions, in order to combat climate change and encourage the transition toward a low carbon society. On the other, we promote respect of the environmental context in which we operate, through policies targeted on efficient use of water resources and the reduction of waste produced, as well as the prevention of possible toxic spills and, more in general, on the defence of biodiversity.

As a guarantee of our commitment, we have implemented a certified environmental management system according to standard ISO 14001.

Climate change

The battle against climate change is the main challenge facing mankind today, not only in the energy sector, but for all of society, so much so that we consider it an integral part of our business model.

Our strategy for combating climate change is based primarily on the scenario analysis as of 2050, elaborated with a view of identifying the macrotrends and main drivers of the energy sector on the technological, political, legislative level, as well as the socio-political and other similar aspects, and how they will affect Saipem's business. These scenarios are updated at least once a year and the results are presented to the Board of Directors and Top Management to be broken down into strategic lines.

Our climate strategy provides for a major commitment to the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels, offering our clients increasingly sustainable solutions, investing in renewable technologies, developing the use of more sustainable fossil fuels and diversifying our activities.

For this purpose, we are in the front line in the sector of installation of offshore wind farms, we develop technologies for producing energy from waste or discarded raw materials and we support innovation in the energy sector, also through our new XSIGHT division.

Moreover, we implement solutions for the use of natural gas, both for our own activities and in the offers we make to our clients, as well as systems to reduce the impact caused by the extraction, transportation and use of fossil fuels.

In parallel with our commitments in the energy sector, we invest in related markets such as water systems and infrastructures, in support of our strategy to take an active interest in every aspect of the environment and community life.

Reduce emissions and increase energy efficiency

To make our operations more efficient at the energy level, we have drafted specific four-year plans for the Group and developed complex systems for monitoring and managing emissions.

Digital technologies and innovation are important tools in the battle against climate change. In particular, we are committed in two important areas: maximisation of energy efficiency in our business activities (through innovative initiatives applied to ships and drilling sites) and strong efforts toward digital transformation applied to work methods and our ability to suggest new solutions.

At the business level, we want to present ourselves to our clients as a supplier of innovative solutions, expanding our business offering and entering green sectors such as renewable sources, energy storage (hydrogen), sustainable use of “necessary” fossil fuels and the design of new hybrid configurations for drilling rigs.

Water resources

Operating as we often do in sensitive areas considered to be in “water stress”, we promote efficient use of water resources, also through the reduction of waste and reuse of wastewater both at the level of HSE policy and at the operating level: we have installed wastewater treatment systems in our work locations and have put in place systems that signal any leaks in pipelines, in addition to developing routine maintenance plans of all our installations. In addition, we have implemented system engineering solutions that permit the reuse of water after proper treatment, an activity which is fundamental to minimising our water consumption.

The result has been that total water consumption was down, in 2018, to 6,850,800 m3 (-11% compared to 2017), with a significant increase in the percentage of reused water in the total.

In a view of limiting to a minimum the waste going to landfills or incinerators, we have drafted policies for the management of the waste we produce, providing for adequate training of the personnel and the development of targeted procedures for recycling it or reusing it as new material or as fuel. We have also undertaken to select suitable storage areas, where the impact will be minimum, and have replaced many hazardous waste with non-toxic alternatives, through a gradual modernisation of our operating technologies.
In 2018, we produced 381,500 tons of waste, down by 11.5% with respect to the previous year and almost 58% less compared with 2016.

Spills and environmental safety

A key aspect in our environmental strategy, as well as in our concern with safety, is the prevention of possible hazardous spills and the management of the relative emergencies. This is fundamental in a sector like ours. We are committed, therefore, to identifying and monitoring all the possible risks connected with the storage, transportation and use of hazardous substances during our operations. Thanks to our extensive experience, we are in the lead in the development of technologies capable of responding promptly to emergencies, especially with regard to oil spills. In this connection, we’d like to call attention to our Subsea Well Response Project (SWRP), devoted to the development of rapid and effective solutions in case of accidents as a result of subsea activity: in this view, our Offset Installation Equipment (OIE) is particularly noteworthy. We also organise training courses for all our employees relative to correct procedures for managing and limiting environmentally dangerous spills and thereby protecting the environment in which we operate.

Early Warning Integrated System (EWIS)

Among the most innovative solutions we are currently developing, the Early Warning Integrated System is an innovative platform for collecting data in support of operating decisions relative to the emergencies caused by oil spills.
To provide as much useful information as possible, the system gathers, integrates and processes data from different sources (satellites, radars, fixed observation points, etc.), displaying them on simple, easy-to-read screens and maps.


Preserving biodiversity and ecosystems is a key feature of the way Saipem interacts with the surrounding environment.

Saipem’s biodiversity strategy focuses in particular on:

  • protected areas and areas with a high level of biodiversity
  • endangered species
  • ecosystem services that are socially and ecologically fundamental, such as water. Saipem promotes an efficient use and consumption of water, particularly in areas affected by high levels of water stress.

On all of its operations, Saipem works to meet all requirements and implement all control measures designed to ensure the safeguarding of biodiversity and the integrity of ecosystems.
